Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) ? formerly known as Deccan Sugar Institute ? is an autonomous body established in 1975 by the sugarcane growing members of co-operative sugar factories in the State of Maharashtra, India. VSI is the only organisation of its kind in the world, founded and funded by the sugarcane farmers. The institute performs all scientific, technical and educational functions relevant to the sugar and alcohol industry. The institute strives for progress of the sugar industry, and operates through three channels: academic, extension, and research. VSI provides technical support to 146 sugar mills and 74 distilleries, as well as many non-member sugar factories and distilleries within India and internationally. VSI is recognised as a scientific and industrial research organisation by India?s Ministry of Science and Technology.
